The super visa is a multi-entry visa that provides multiple entries for a period up to 10 years. The key difference is that the super visa allows an individual to stay for up to 5 years at a time in Canada, while a 10-year multiple entry visa would only have a status period for each entry of six months only. The Super Visa provides parents and grandparents more time in Canada and does not require renewal upon re-entry into the country until the validity period has passed.

As of July 4, 2022, Super Visa holders can now stay in Canada for five years at a time vs. 2 years. Applicants may also purchase medical insurance from countries other than Canada, thus saving thousands of dollars per year. Medical insurance must be maintained while staying in Canada.

There is no lottery to get a Super Visa, offering greater certainty to families. However, an officer must be convinced the visit is genuine and the applicants will return to their home country at the end of their visit.
